The Author

Karl Lubomirski

Born on September 8, in Hall in Tyrol.

Lubomirski was an only child. In 1942 he was separated from his mother. In 1945 he was returned to her. A tender heart, a natural curiosity about everything and a loving and attentive upbringing developed him early on into a reader of books. In Innsbruck, Karl Lubomirski completed schools and a business education.

An essay written by the sixteen-year-old appeared in the local newspaper. Poems were written. At nineteen, Karl Lubomirski wrote a script entitled, "Alcibiades".

Public readings and a literary beginning was abruptly ended with the move to Italy for health reasons in 1962.

At 24 years of age, five years later, and with conflicting experiences in Italian private circles and... as well as professional circles, Lubomirski began reading the contemporary Italian poetry of that period (Ungaretti, Quasimodo, Montale), which stood in stark contrast to the German, and took up the pen once again.

In the course of his two decades of nonstop business travels in the south of the country – Lubomirski advised equipment manufacturers at Italian universities for an Austrian company - the majority of his lyrical works were created, which were collected in 1960, and expanded in 1962, in the book Propyläen der Nacht. The book is a collection of the contents of seven (sold out) German volumes of poetry, which is currently available in 15 languages.

What cannot be said in poetry – Lubomirski's most congenial form of expression – one can find in his (also sold out) short story collection, Bagatellen (Ed. Atelier Vienna).  More can be found in his plays, Lions are not Red, Judge, Storm and Spirit, Dr. Bon's Birthday, and others.

Dissertations and prizes have been devoted to Lubomirski's works. Innsbruck awarded him the gold medal for achievement in the arts, and Tyrol presented him with the Tyrolian Eagle in Gold, and the President of Austria with Cross of Honor, First Class for the Arts and Sciences.
